Best Bubbles to Bring in the New Year

There is nothing quite like the delightful pop of opening a fresh bottle of sparkling wine. The cunning marketers of Champagne have worked tirelessly for hundreds of years with one goal in mind: Champagne is for celebrating. New job? Pull out some bubbles. Just had a baby? Grab yourself a flute. Time to celebrate the New Year? Buy one of these incredible bottles of sparkling wine and have one awesome send off to 2017.

One stir of the StiQit in any champagne or sparkling wine flute will instantly remove all sulfites from your delicious glass of bubbles.

Roederer Estate – L’Ermitage 2011 Brut

Anderson Valley’s Roederer Estate is a pantheon of spritz in California’s Mendocino County. Cool morning fogs and coastal breezes help keep grapes fresh and acid-driven, perfect for sparkling wine. This blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay utilizes the traditional method (Methode Champenoise) to develop the finest mousse. A five-year secondary fermentation allows the yeast ample time to break down, lending L’Ermitage a creamy mouthfeel. This bubbly has notes of fresh Granny Smith apple pie, lightly toasted bread, Bosc pear, and hazelnut. At roughly 1/4 the price of their Champagne counterpart, Cristal, enjoy some of the best bubbles the Louis Roederer family of wines has to offer. Sorelle Bronca – Prosecco di Valdobbiadene NV Extra Dry

With opulent floral character and a very easy price point, a couple bottles of Sorelle Bronca’s Prosecco is perfect for watching the ball drop this year. Valdobbiadene in northeast Italy is the ideal region for growing crisp, refreshing Glera (the grape used to make Prosecco). Unlike the French, sparkling houses in Veneto make their bubbles with the Charmat Method. The Charmat Method involves a secondary fermentation in a large, airtight tank which reduces contact of the wine with the yeast compared to the Methode Champenoise. This results in cleaner wines that are a bit more steely and floral, with less of that leesy, bready character. Perfect with shrimp skewers and soft cheeses this extra dry example is incredibly easy drinking with Wisteria and Honeysuckle aplenty, particularly on the nose. The palate displays sharp, clean character with driving grapefruit, lemon zest and the lightest touch of honey. Find it here. Photo courtesy of K&L Wine Merchants.

Segura Viudas  – Gran Cuvée Reserva NV Brut

With 15 months on the lees, the Gran Cuvée Reserva by Segura Viudas is showing beautifully. Macabeo and Paralleda, two native Spanish varietals, are blended and bottled before the second fermentation begins. A modest autolytic profile is backed up by driving green apple, graphite, and white florals. The finish displays delightful notes of citrus with lemon and lime giving a very clean mouthfeel. This Gran Cuvée Reserva is the perfect appetizer wine, try it with spinach and artichoke dip, chicken quesadillas, and grilled prawns. Find it here. Photo courtesy of Freixenetusatrade.
